CURRENT NEWS:

Work Day Reminder – Saturday, July 16th

Saturday, 8:00 to noon (or until whenever it gets too hot). Thank you for helping us to make our Garden a beautiful place!

Chipper Maintenance Needed:

Who has a truck and would be willing to deliver the garden’s chipper to Total Power on S. Broadway for a maintenance check up?  The compost team is eager to put the chipper to use, but it needs a little maintenance first.  Please contact leadership@rosedalegarden.org if you can help.

Garlic Harvest Time

For those growing garlic in their plots, if you haven’t already, it’s probably time to harvest.  The garden’s garlic was harvested this past week and the crop is unusually small.  The warm, dry winter seems to have had an ill effect.

Bee Update:

We’ll be doing another inspection of all the hives this coming Saturday at 8:30 am – please let me know if you can make it.  Special thanks to Barb and Ron that came out and helped on the 26th.  We inspected all the hives.  The four hives that are new this year from packages were all doing well, and had added a lot of weight – that means honey! With such good progress toward their own winter stores, we added honey Supers and a queen excluder to all four hives.  This is the 3rd ‘box’ on the top of the hive.  The excluder prevents the queen from going up into the Super, so only worker bees access the Super.  This means the only thing in the Super is honey!  And that is the honey we harvest in the fall.  On Saturday we’ll take a look and see how much honey they have packed away so far.  My hive at home was filled solid in two weeks, as the Linden trees are in full bloom and produce a fair amount of nectar.  If the hives at the garden are 2/3rds or more full, we’ll add a 2nd Super to them.

We also inspected hive 3 last time and found it still queenless.  We did not spot a laying worker so after much discussion, we decided to try installing a new queen again.  Thanks to Ron and Barb for doing this, and Jeff also helped with the release several days later.  Hopefully this hive is now queen right and doing well.  We’ll see.

Lastly, we inspected hive 7.  It was doing OK but was not ready for a Super yet.  At this point, it should be very strong, or it might need a new queen also before going into winter.

I hope your tomatoes and other veggies are loving the heat and starting to really get going.  Our blackberry bush is the biggest it has ever been and is loaded with berries and flowers which is exciting.  Unfortunately, we just saw the first japanese beetles of the season – the chickens will be happy as we collect the ones in our plot and feed them to our chickens.

Stay cool and let me know if you can join us this Saturday. BeeRad
